Doing Good

Something to think about.

Doing Good

9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9 (ESV)

This verse is not about giving up.  It is about getting tired and quitting. Getting tired of what? This verse has nothing to do with the problems of life; it is talking about doing good. We need to continue to do the good God has called us to even if we do not see the results we want. If we don't quit, we will see the results of “doing good.”

Dwelling Place

Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place—the Most High, who is my refuge—10 no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent.11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.12 On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.13 You will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.14 "Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name.15 When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him.16 With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation."

I want to make the Lord my dwelling place where no harm can come my way. Where His angels can protect me, and keep me from harm. Where He can hear me and answer me. Where I can possess all of His promises.  Psalms 91:9-16

Do you realize we Christians are the only ones that can proclaim His salvation? Every other religious or philosophical belief system is dependent on our works or worth with unknown results. Our salvation is based on on the grace of God. That is something to sing about.

Injustice

He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor repay us according to our iniquities. Psalms 103: 10

I am glad ecstatic that God is unjust. Some of you may be offended that I have written that, but think for a moment. If God is just and He holds me responsible for my sins, iniquities, and transgressions what hope would I have? If he required the full payment for my sins against man not to mention my transgressions against Him, what would be my end? If it were not for the justification I received through the sacrifice of Christ on my behalf, I would have to face the justice, God.  Encountering God on my own when He requires payment for my life is something I would fear more than anything else.  Because of Christ, I am not afraid of the day of justice.

Glorious Splendor

11 They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom
and tell of your power,

The glorious splendor of the kingdom of God is not a secret to be kept or defended; it is to be proclaimed and exalted. It is not a code that needs to be deciphered or a precious jewel that needs to be found. It is a reality that needs to be shared with everyone that will listen; our God is great.

If you dwell “in the shelter of the Most High” you will be protected from the assaults of this life. You will look out from under His wings and see the terrible reward of the wicked. I want to dwell in the shelter of the Most High.

THE TRAVELER

THE TRAVELER

A lawyer asked Jesus, what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus replies by asking him, “What is written in the Law?” Quoting the law the lawyer answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” Luke 10:27  Jesus responded,  “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.” Not being content with Jesus’s answer he asks another question. Who is my neighbor?

Jesus tells him the parable of the good Samaritan.  The story is about a traveler who gets robbed, stripped, beaten, and left to die, on the side of the road. His countrymen finding him ignore him.  Along comes a Samaritan, he takes it upon himself to bring the injured man to an inn and pays the proprietor to care for his wounds.  He promised the proprietor to reimburse him for any extra expense. In this story, Jesus illustrated the one in need is his neighbor.

But wait! Is there more to this story than a Samaritan doing what any decent person would do? A man, traveling from Jerusalem headed to Jericho is ambushed, and left to die. Would it be unreasonable to assume the man is a Jew?  When we, you or I tell a story we make assumptions based on our surroundings. For instance, if we tell a story that occurs in the United States we assume the characters are American unless we are told otherwise. Jesus does exactly that in this story, he identifies the Jewish priest, Levi, and Samaritan. The road is in Jerusalem, the three people who come upon the beaten man, are Jews or of Jewish descent.  Jesus intentionally identifies the other characters in this story. If we look at it in context Jesus is talking to a Jew in Israel, and the story is specifically about Jews how can we assume the victim is not a Jew?

Why does it matter if the victim is a Jew? Jews would not have anything to do with Samaritans. In the story of the woman at the well, “The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)” John 4:9 Because of her race, the woman at the well is surprised, a Jew would ask anything of her. What she is saying is that the Jews did not consider the Samaritans worthy enough to fetch them water. The racism in this statement is palpable.

The act of compassion becomes more than doing the decent thing. It crosses over racial lines, and it becomes an immense act of love. The despised, hated, marginalized, minimized, disrespected, dehumanized Samaritan is now in a position to gloat over the Jew. However, he put aside all the racism he has experienced and lent aid to the victim. He not only helped the beaten man but He transported him to safety, and then pays the bill, and promises to pay for additional expenses.  He is living out Christ's commandment, “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;” Matthew 5:44 (KJV)

Yes, we are to lend aid to our neighbor. Don't stop doing what a straightforward interpretation of this story implies. Keep helping and working with those that need our help, but also attempt to show love to those who are in opposition to us. If the victim in this story is a Jew, the genuine act of love Christ is referring to goes well beyond doing the right thing.

The world is suffering and dying. Science and governments have failed us. We need a Samaritan and His name is Jesus. Share your testimony.

This is that day, give thanks to the Lord, exalt His name, sing praises to the Lord, and tell all the earth of His glorious works. Do you realize everyday is that day?

It is not a requirement, we do not have to be afflicted to turn to God. However, we often turn to affliction by disobeying, ignoring and rejecting God.  Then the affliction to turns us back to God.

Taste and See

Odd phrasing, but the blessing of God are sweet. If you have ever been blessed by God, you can taste the sweetness of His victory. God really is good in all situations. Even the ones we don’t understand. We are blessed if we take refuge (shelter, protection, safety, security, asylum, sanctuary) in Him.

I never thought I would be crowned with anything but the Word says the Lord, “the righteous judge”  will crown me. This is awesome and what is even more awe-inspiring is that it is available to all who have loved his appearing.

He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
   and recovering of sight to the blind,
   to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”

20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” Luke 4:17-21

Today this day, the Lord Jesus is saying the same thing, only He has given us “The Spirit of the Lord.“ To proclaim to all the world,
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
   because he has anointed me
   to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
   and recovering of sight to the blind,
   to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”

He has anointed you and me, "to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”

When I stop and think about your work, I am awed. When I meditate on your deeds, I am amazed by your majesty. Your sovereignty brings me peace. My mind cannot embrace all that you are, but I am thankful for the little I know for what I know shows me that you are God, and there is none other.
